First Love

Sunday morning as I was preparing for church, a melody from years ago played over in my mind. It was just a simple chorus, but it brought such warm memories.

I began to think about the words playing in my mind:

The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows.

The more that I love Him, more love He bestows.

Each day is like heaven, my heart over – flows,

The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows.

Words by Bill and Gloria Gaither

I thought about how much more I love Jesus today than ever before. When we think about verses referring to first love, we immediately think about how much we loved Him when we first came to know Him as Savior. Revelation 2:4 refers to the believers who have “left their first love.” Yes, indeed, if we have fallen away from loving Him, we must repent and return to that first love.

Our love for the Lord, when we first come to Him as Savior, is an overwhelming love. But if we walk closely with Him, our years knowing Him can only increase our love for Him. I have personally witnessed His faithfulness, His restorative care, His mercy and grace the many times I have failed or just failed to measure up. I have experienced His healing power over and over in my body and in relationships. I am continually learning about His character and His ways, ways beyond my ways, thoughts above my thoughts. His deeds and His Word prove Him and declare His brilliant glory! His love is constant and immeasurable.

Of course, there are days circumstances and difficulties weigh heavy on our souls. Our thoughts may become clouded by flurries of activities and responsibilities. But when we reflect, listen, and look – seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, remembering to set our minds on things above and not on things of this earth, vision is corrected and our focus is once again pure. We see Him in the light of His glory, and we reflect on His goodness.

We reflect and then we remember:  The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows!

In His care, Bebe
